Choosing A Bible for Your Child
Every child needs to grow up feeling that the Bible is a very special book that he can rely on and can believe.
Your child will depend on you to guide him to develop some responsibility for taking care of his Bible. Show the importance of keeping his Bible in good condition:
- turn the pages slowly so you wont rip the pages
- keep your Bible in a special place
- remember when taking your Bible to church to keep it safe
When choosing a Bible consider:
-
Size - The Bible needs to be large enough to hold comfortably
and small enough to handle and carry. - Color - Avoid a white cover to keep your child's Bible looking clean.
-
Whole Bible - Giving your child a whole Bible rather than just the New
Testament will help them understand that the entire book is called the Bible. - User Friendly - The Bible should be easy to use by both your child and an adult.
-
Realistic Pictures - Find a Bible with realistic pictures for the non-reader.
You'll want your child to learn that the Bible is a true book. This means pictures too! -
Bible Stories - A Bible with Bible stories written in words that your child can
understand is helpful.
You can help you child enjoy Bible stories as you put expression and feeling into the
stories you read. Tell the story in words your child will understand, keeping places,
events and people's names correct. Sit beside your early elementary aged child as you guide him to read a verse or passage from his Bible. Guide older children to read the Bible and then discuss what she has read with you.
As you choose a Bible for your child look for a Bible that is durable, helpful and enjoyable.
Holman Christian Standard's Read-to-Me Bible for Kids is a good choice for preschoolers
and the Illustrated Study Bible for Kids is a good choice for elementary age children.
For older children, a good concordance is important. Holman Bible Concordance for Kids:
A Personal Guide Through the Word For Kids Who Want Answers, is a great example.
